Chronicle-2001

ITC DEPARTMENT 2001 has been a very busy year as usual for the ITC department. Bev Koekemoer left the department at the end of2000 to return to her family in Grahamstown. We thank her for all her work with the junior classes. Andrea Fripp joined the department to teach junior literacy, Shaun van Wyk and Snegugu Zukulu took over the very important task of looking after the special needs ofthe laptop boys. Andrea took maternity leave from the end of the first term and her role was taken over by Gaylene Pienke. I thank all of them very much for their hard work and enthusiasm. Our technician David Baker has worked with dedication in keeping the computers in the school in tiptop shape. The matricclass of2001 are to he complimented on their efforts We still have some way to go in getting the boys to respect the school's property and to understand that they are making life difficult for other pupils as well as the technician in deleting system files and changing settings and passwords. The matric class of 2001 are to be complimented on their efforts, in particular Gregory BentleyComins(B on Higher grade)and Michael Little (A on Standard Grade). Both boys accepted the challenge and worked steadily all year, which lead to their ultimate success. O PHILIPPS MATHE/AATICSDEPARTMENT 2001 was as busy as ever for the Maths Department with several pupils taking part in Maths Olympiads.Some 120 boys wrote the Old Mutual Olympiad with 60% gaining entry to the second round. Neil Hendry received a silver medalfrom the Old Mutual for finishing in the top ten juniors in round two - an outstanding achievement. We continue to strive to keep as many hoys aspossible on Higher Grade and this year a record 62% wrote. 94 pupils from Grade 8 to 11 took part in the Amesa KZN Mathematics Challenge written by over 15,000 pupils. In Grade8 Andrew Hipkin,David Baxter, Michael Hayman (2nd in KZN), Trevor Evans and William Scott all received gold medals for finishing in the top 5%.Four other boys received gold certificates. In Grade9Neil Hendry,Darren Roy and Udo Hellberg all received gold medals with Darren Roy finishing 1st in KZN.Seven other boys received gold certificates. In Grade 10 Darryn Cole and Jonathan Graves received gold medals. In Grade 11 Graham Lewis received a gold medal. Congratulations to you all. Within the department we continue to strive to keep as many boys as possible on Higher Grade and this year a record 62% wrote. Our matric results were good with 11 pupils gaining A's at Higher Grade, 4 at Standard Grade and 3out of8in Advanced Mathematics.
