Firstly a local resident and an expert in the distribution of drugs in the Hillcrest area, Mrs. Hickmam forced these young gentlemen to sit up and take notice of the inherent dangers of the drug trade and the ruthless exploitation of young boys by the local drug lords. Secondly the problem of indiscriminate sex and the HIV / AIDS problem was addressed by Mrs. Anne Leon, from the Hillcrest AIDS Crisis Centre who is herself an AIDS carrier. Thirdly, setting, planning and succeeding in attaining personal objectives was covered by aMr. TimBiggs, past South African canoeist and four times winner of the Dusi Canoe Marathon. He used his experiences in navigating the Amazon in plastic kayaks, from its source in the Andes to the Brazilian jungle, to illustrate the importance in planning thoroughly and being prepared to accommodate change. Kearsney Staff ran workshops with the boys, ranging from fun sessions on Lateral Thinking skills, to dealing with fundamental differences between African and European culture, through to different leadership styles, especially pertaining to boys in a high school setting. The subject choice dilemma at the end of Grade 9 was addressed by the introduction of a Computer Programme. It provided the boys with an interest profile and a vast source of career guidance. It gave the boys early exposure in this most important area. 74
