DEBATING SOCIETY SOCIETY Debating continues to help those boys takingpart to develop self-confidence, mentalagility and the ability to speak with authority. The Debating Society had a fairly successful year. Our juniors (P Hlahane, C NiculescuMarcu, D Roy,J Sinclair and S Wisdom)rook parr in both the Durban and Coastal League and the Umhlanga Rocks Rotary competition in the third term. Darren Roy and Cristian NiculescuMarcu were adjudged best speaker on four and three occasions respectively, and at senior level I hope that these boys will continue to take their debating with as much skill and enthusiasm that they've shown in the past two years. Our seniors(F Damjanovic,A Fox,D Sinclair, M Toscano and, on occasion, M Nel and S Tshume)took part in the Durban Interschools' Competition but decided not to take part in the rotary competition because oftrials and academic commitments. The boys who debate for Kearsney are almost always good all-rounders,and I have always been impressed with the way in which they have managed to do so much with so little time! We did, however, enter the Rotary - Daily News team-speaking competition. 2001 was a year of consolidation in debating, but the activity continues to help those boys taking part to develop self-confidence, mental agility and above all the ability to speak with interest, humour and authority in public few other school activities do as much for those who participate than Debating. At Kearsney the interhouse results were: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Sheffield Pembroke Gillingham Finningley JMCMICHAEL FRESHWATER ANGLING CLUB CLUB CLUB CLUB CLUB CLUB CLUB CLUB Freshwater Angling was an addition to the Kearsney club scene this year. A number ofboys joined the club and attended every outing arranged. An attempt to persuade the controllers of local waters that schoolboys on three-hour outings should not be exploited by being charged the rate for dawn to dusk proved spectacularly unsuccessful. Nevertheless, we managed several outings each term. No astonishing catches wete recorded but in the traditional phrase "a good time was had by all", and never since the days of Izak Walton has a small bag prevented a fisherman, especially a coarse fisherman, from deriving plenty of controversial mileage from his pastime.
