STANDARD BANK FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS Once again, a group of enthusiastic, culture-driven marries accompanied by Mrs. R Wallace and MrR Candotti set off for the Camelot of all festivals - the Standard Bank Festival of the Arts. This fun-packed special time manages to squeeze plays, music, dancing, poetry, seminars and lectures into five solidly packed days that begin early and conclude late. The fact that the girls outnumbered the boys 3-1 may have been an important factor in the mix,but even that did not detract from the superb entertainment which ranged from satirical theatre to lectures on film technique, from excellent musical reviews to self-indulgent drum beating sessions, from mime movement to poetry recitals. In fact there was everything a lover of the arts could wish for including a guest speaker A guest speaker managed to illustrate the importance ofperception by taking off most ofhis clothes. who managed to illustrate the importance of perception by taking off most of his clothes. The charm of the events was always enhanced by the lively discussions late into the night, the "chance" encounters with girls from all over the country and the opportunity to engage in university student life with maximum energy and minimum sleep. I highly recommended this experience to all culture-lovers who wish to undergo the same journey next year. M NEL CO 111 111 TWELVE TWELVE CLUB CLUB CLUB CLUB This year the members of the 12 Club found it difficult to meet at the same time and a sense of continuity was often lost. Nevertheless, the club found time to attend the classic lecture on "Subliminal Seduction," a journey into the hidden sexual world of advertising. Lectures rangedfrom sports psychology to computer technology. Keith Brown's highly stimulating journey into the world ofglobal teams and how each pupil's strengths and weaknesses dovetails into that framework made for interesting soul-searching. Lectures followed that featured sports psychology and computer technology. 86 The July holidays took some of the boys to the Standard Bank Festival ofthe Arts which immersed the boys in a wide variety of cultural activities ranging from plays to poetry workshops to music gatherings. These activities both fascinated and extended the pupils beyond their school world into other orbits. Which is, after all, the mission statement ofthe 12 Club. RCANDOTTI
