This is a problem as we are losing some talented players. It is very difficult to convince a boy to continue playing a game like cricket when he sees his friends plunging into the pool for swimming or water-polo or whatever and within an hour it could be all over. Ifhe is playing away he may even go home!Compare this to a pupil standing in the hot sun all day and maybe not even batting or bowling, finishing at6pm and if he is away perhaps getting home at 8.30 pm after a scintillating bus trip from Michaelhouse. Perhaps it is this "Quick fix" society we live in. Another problem in the past has been boys in Grade 12 being allowed to pack up the game all together. Fields are still a problem with some ofthe bigger schools having so few. Once again I must thank Highbury for the continued use oftheir two fields on a Saturday afternoon. At least we are able to reciprocate a little with the use of our new Astro Hockey field. We do however try and get as many games as possible for the lower teams midweek when schools cannot match us on Saturdays. 17 staffsuccessfully attended a two day coaching course run by the KNCU. We also purchased a new cover for the A.H.Smith Oval which has made the world ofdifference. Andrew Gait, a Kearsney Old Boy and former Free State player, joined us in the fourth term to help with the coaching. He ran two electives in the mornings and coached some boys during PE lessons and then roamed from team to team in the afternoon. He has proved most successful so far and is due to stay with us till the end of March. The First XI had a trip to England but more of that will be in their report. Our facilities were again used a great deal in the holidays for KZN U19 and U15 trials as well as the primary schools . The reasons for this are simple, our pitches, grounds and facilities are good and for this I must thank Mr.Jay Govender and his ground staff. Einally a thank you for those coaches who give up so much oftheir time to keep the sport going under difficult times and for their hours spent umpiring on Saturdays.
