99 Whilst Kearsney’s popular band Postcard just missed winning the Battle of the Bands, they won a slot to perform on the stage at Splashy Fen 2012. Young band Toxic Candy were the eventual winners of R40 000 wor th of music equipment from Marshall Music Hillcrest. New on this year’s programme was an Amateur Photographic Competition, which attracted almost 300 entries – including photographs from Hilton College,Thomas More College, Hillcrest High and Highbury. The competition was judged by MatthewWillman, the Durbanbased documentary photographer, who thought the variety and quality of entries in the competition was spectacular. The FunZone offered enter tainment for all ages and varied levels of bravery; and the craft, food and refreshment stalls added to a successful Upbeat vibe. This was the ambitious school production put on stage as part of this year’s Upbeat festival under directors Tracey van den Aardweg, Bernard Krüger and Ulaetha Singh. Scripted by Liam Magner and Jane Baillie, Scrap Metal combined the best of Kearsney’s talented dramatists, musicians and dancers.The show starred the comedic duo of Patrick Bell and Jono Deighton as Buttons and Bows. Kearsney’s home-grown indie rock band Postcard - thrilled audiences and received outstanding reviews from all who came to see it. Jolene Ostendorf Scrap Metal ‘Scrap Metal’ is set in a post-apocalyptic world devoid of joy and passion.
