Chronicle-2011

101 This page is sponsored by: Jacques and Francois van der Merwe CLUBS The year kicked off with a number of sessions presented by Mr Candotti, dedicated to attempting to understand what makes women tick. After that we moved onto a fascinating topic: “Flipnosis” (the ar t of flipping an argument on its head and leaving your opponent speechless) as well as spending some time looking at subliminal adver tising, which was possibly one of the most popular sessions with the boys. After rating other members of the group’s personality characteristics on a survey for the Harvard leadership program, we were presented with our results by Keith Brown of Symlog. He showed us how well our personalities would be suited to management and a corporate environment. We were once again able to take par t in a MENSA test and our group did not disappoint with most of the members being ranked in the top 2% of the world. These meetings have always been both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating and I sincerely hope that this club remains a tradition at the College. We would like to thank Mr Candotti for all his hard work in organising meetings and speakers and for giving up so many of his Monday evenings. Rowan Page The 12 club The club boasts the top 12 academics in grade 12 who are exposed to stimulating and thought-provoking speakers, programmes and cutting-edge ideas. A handful of dedicated boys is striving to improve their understanding of the Afrikaans language and culture by watching Afrikaans movies. The industry has been blooming and there are many interesting movies from which to choose. This is a fun way to learn without noticing that you are learning. I try to cater for all personality types so movie-outings are on the agenda for next year. Zastra Conway-Nunn Afrikaans film club This club is offered to the grade 11s in the third term and was greatly enjoyed by both our boys and the St Mary’s girls. Dances such as swing, quickstep, waltz and cha-cha were quickly mastered and our final session ended in an elimination contest won by the nimble footed Thulani Mapanga and his partner. Hopefully the steps learned will be put to good use in the years to come. Paula Isaac Ballroom Dancing Surfing generates laughter at its very suggestion, and this is because it turns not a skill into an art, but an inexplicable and useless urge into a vital way of life. Surf Club evolved over the course of the year into a core of enthusiastic board riders who charged the waves regardless of weather or swell conditions. It is this enthusiasm that has made it so wor thwhile to take charge of the club and my thanks must go to the boys for their passion for the spor t. It is with sadness that we will say goodbye to our two matric members, Ryan Green and Kyle Louw, who have shared chairman duties. Their unwavering commitment to the club has fostered the excellent attitude and set an example for junior members. We are all certainly envious of Ryan who will be going to “study” on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2012. In spite of the loss of these key members, I look forward to the addition of new board riders in 2012. Julian Lewis will be taking over the duties of club chairman and I have every confidence that he will take the club to new heights. In Kelly Slater’s words, “It’s like the mafia. Once you’re in – you’re in. There’s no getting out” Here’s to the mafia members present and future. Matt Saville Board riders After much nagging I re-opened my kitchen to a keen group of boys who wanted to learn the fine ar t of cooking; or was it just the idea of more food that drove them into the kitchen? From simple, yet healthy and tasty meals like Chicken Wraps, to the more gourmet style of Thai Green Curry, the budding chefs cer tainly surprised with their skill. Andrea Fripp Cooking Club After a short spell on ice, the club cooked up a storm again this year.
