102 For 2 hours every Friday afternoon, the boys compete against each other in various categories using freeware games. There is a great atmosphere at these meetings with music, friendly banter and good competition. Next year we will be getting newer and more powerful computers which will be capable of running more modern games. We will also be purchasing Call of Duty 4, a popular first person shooter, using the funds we raised this year. I also hope to start running StarCraft II next year. This is a very popular real time strategy game, similar to chess, but both players can move simultaneously. The first graphics card, a device which allows games to be played at higher graphics settings, was installed in the first term and we hope to purchase more in 2012. Matt Conradie Computer gaming The club launched at the beginning of the 3rd term and has been a huge success. F irst, Sybil Terblanche left to take up a position at St. Mary’s and handed the running of the club over to Simon Moore, who then himself announced that he would be leaving at the end of the year to take up a position in Pietermaritzburg. Despite this, the boys continued to dedicate themselves to the club and kept the activity in good health. In the High School league, matches were played against Kloof, Hillcrest, Pinetown Boys, Nilgiri, Gelofte and Werda. Gelofte won the league, and Kearsney came a respectable 4th . Consistently good results were achieved by Thando Mathebula, KgomotsoTshabalala and Alber t OjoAromokudu. The other highlight of the year was the Inter-house chess competition, held in the 3rd term. There were many intense matches played, and most of the top chess players at Kearsney took part. Gillingham and Sheffield battled it out in the final, and thanks largely toWalter Jordaan who was unbeaten, Gillingham prevailed. My thanks go to all the boys who have taken par t this year and in particular to the chess captain, Phakamani Zulu. It is impossible to screen material that appeals to all, but through this club, boys have the ability to decide for themselves if they enjoy various comedians or shows, and to make informed decisions about what is acceptable and enjoyable. The comedy club is most definitely a hit with the boys. The only two statutory requirements to join are: a desire to laugh and a sense of humour.
