Chronicle-2011

109 Top national and provincial mountain bike riders took part in a celebrity race and we had an amazing turnout of parents, staff, boys and celebrities. The celebrities included top KZN MTB men’s riders Andrew Hill and Carl Calverly, as well as Amy Jane Mundy. James Reid, a top SA junior MTB rider and Old Boy, also participated. Others who competed in the race were spor ts journalist TimWhitfield, Bradley Stroberg (both Old Boys), Colin Stroberg (Cyclelab in Pietermaritzburg), Dwayne and Charles Stander and Jason Nichol. James posted the fastest time for 1 lap: an incredible 12mins and 55 seconds. Other amazing times were logged by Andrew Hill (13:23), Carl Calverly (13: 58) and Carlo Marzoppi (15:32) The club is star ting to gain momentum with a number of boys now training in the afternoons. Carlo Marzoppi is making a name for himself in the mountain bike world and is quickly establishing himself as a star. He is the top ranked KZN rider in his age group. Another Kearsney pupil, Josh Brown, also competed on a regular basis and was placed 4th after the Big 5 series events. A number of staff also use the track and have competed in events throughout the province. Some of our boys who have competed in events this year include: James Kirsten, Matt Stamatis, Peter Hudson, Brett Reinhardt, Josh Arde, Axel and Chris Car twright, Jeremy Maarschalk, Gareth Frohlich and Hilton Marais. 3 provincial events were held at Kearsney this year, including the Spur and Muddy Buddy series and positive feedback was received about the track. Ant Willows Mountain Bike Club The mountain bike track was officially opened in February this year. The 24 new grade 10s that joined are an enthusiastic and committed group of boys who have worked hard on the syllabus during the year and who are now itching to begin the JSE investment challenge in 2012. The 44 grade 11s that participated in the challenge this year did themselves proud. Although none of the 11 teams entered by the College actually won the competition, the lessons learned have been invaluable and progressive. The year has been characterised by the unfolding European debt crisis and the growing Occupy movement. As such we spent more time than usual engaging with macroeconomics and political economy issues over and above our usual focus on market trading techniques. The boys were fascinated by these unfolding dramas and have learnt impor tant lessons for their financial futures. My thanks go to Luke Osborne who chaired the club and also to the members who gave up an hour of their time every week to develop their financial education. Jason Rottcher Market Wizards This year was a success for the club. CLUBS
