Chronicle-2011

122 For the first time we were classified as a full year spor t and this affording the specialist paddlers the opportunity to focus on their chosen spor t. We have progressed from a culture of solely par ticipation to one of healthy competition and participation. I have been encouraged by the passion and enjoyment that many of the boys have developed for the spor t over the year and we have worked hard to promote the sport, especially at a junior level. During the year, we were for tunate to introduce a stroke 2 max paddling simulator in the gym. The addition of this equipment and 5 entry level K1’s highlights our commitment to raising the standard of canoeing at the College. Specialist paddlers now have the oppor tunity to participate fully by having access to a paddling facility that can be used daily. The team was captained by Andrew Adie who started of the season with an amazing 49th place overall in the Dusi canoe marathon. Stuar t Patterson,Tyler Ross Smith and Christopher Walker all successfully completed their first Dusi’s. The inter-schools competition was once again fiercely competitive. Kearsney par ticipated in all disciplines, including slalom, canoe polo, river racing and flat water events. Our results were encouraging, finishing in third place behind Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse. The boys attended the surf ski school this year. Under the guidance of legend Barry Lewin, the boys made impressive progress in a few sessions. The boys then represented the College at the SA Schools surf ski champs and in doing so, gained valuable experience. ‘Weekends off ’ were few, with the boys having training sessions at Inanda and Shongweni dams and trips on the upper Umgeni river. Many of our novices obtained their river proficiencies and will be ready to race fully in 2012. The immediate goals in the new year will be the 2012 Drak Challenge and the Dusi Canoe Marathon. With the increased numbers and enthusiasm we are hoping to become contenders for podium finishes in schools and club races.
