Chronicle-2011

Cricket The fields are in magnificent shape and it is with great pride that we are able to host our rivals and friends at the school. In 2011 we were indeed for tunate to acquire the services of two gentlemen, Andrew Brether ton and Ayanda Peter, both of whom have cer tainly made their mark on the improvement of our facilities. Under Andrew’s guidance we have managed to purchase two additional rollers for the pitches and are in the process of obtaining portable sightscreens for Matterson, Osler, Rober ts and Silcock fields. The indoor nets continue to prove their weight in gold, par ticularly in the latter part of the year, which saw some very heavy rain. Jon Kent, former South African and Dolphins cricketer, worked tirelessly this year with our coaches to improve the technical aspects of the boys’ games. Jon was also been able to bring in current Dolphins wicket keeper, Darryn Smit, and bowler Old Boy Kyle Abbott, to assist in these departments. We thank these gentlemen for helping our boys develop their skills. The College sent teams to a host of festivals and tournaments this year. The 1st XI attended the pre-season independent schools festival, hosted this year by Michaelhouse; took part in the night league as well as the National Standard Bank schools 20/20 competition; the St Alban’s Festival, the St David’s 20/20 Festival and, finally, the Michaelmas Cricket week, held in Maritzburg. The U15 A side took part in the St Stithian’s independent schools festival as well as the Grey festival. Undoubtedly the highlight of this festival was their defeat of a very powerful Grey College side. The U14 A side took part in the annual Charl Van Rooyen festival, this year hosted by Paarl Boys, and they gave a good account of themselves against very tough opposition. My thanks go to all the coaches who toiled long hours, we are very for tunate to have so many experienced school masters as coaches. The director of spor t, Mr Keith Thompson, is thanked for his effor ts over the past year as well as Mrs Val Dixon, who ensures that our many transpor t requirements are taken care of. Lastly, my thanks go out to all the parents, as well as the Headmaster and Doctor Shuker for their continued suppor t of cricket at Kearsney. After an exceptionally successful CocaCola week held in Cape Town, we were delighted to hear that Craige Kirsten had not only received the ‘Bowler of theWeek’ award, but also achieved South African Schools selection for his bowling performance against very tough opposition.
