The side represented Kearsney at two cricket festivals: the St Stithians festival and Grey PE festival. The side acquitted themselves well and Grey seems to have become a very happy hunting ground for Kearsney as we came away with victories against both Grey PE and Grey Bloemfontein. The match against Grey PE turned out to be the match of the year. Kearsney bowled extremely well and backed it up with some excellent fielding to confine Grey to a modest total of 117. In conditions that favoured the bowlers, Kearsney batsmen toiled and struggled to reach the target. But once again Langa Masuku, with the help of the tail enders Bili Ntuli and Francois van der Merwe, whittled out the last few runs to give Kearsney a well-earned victory. Back at home the home match against Hilton showed what the side was more than capable of when they are firing on all cylinders. Kearsney amassed 293 runs in 50 overs – perhaps a record for Matterson. This included a scintillating 105 from opener Dylan Griffiths. To their credit Hilton came out fighting but some excellent bowling from Luke Smith halted their progress and gave Kearsney a victory. Dylan Griffiths and Luke Smith were the most consistent with the bat and both players managed to score centuries during the year. Francois van der Merwe and Tristan Tedder were the pick of the bowlers and the side as a whole put in some outstanding fielding achievements. The four th term was less successful mainly, I think, as a result of the loss of some key players in the batting department. However, the boys’ batting improved and some commendable scores were made towards the end of the term. The team spirit was excellent at all times and the boys really seemed to have enjoyed their season. Highlights were wins against Maritzburg College by 7 wickets andWestville by 6 wickets. The narrow loss against Glenwood was one of the most exciting schoolboy matches in which I have had the privilege to officiate.
