Chronicle-2011

CROSS Country 134 Pre-season training took place in our conservancy on the mountain bike track, with an additional visit to Monteseel. The league runs were limited to six due to a combination of apathy on behalf of some schools and poor weather. Generally, our boys did well at these events, in par ticular Andrew Adie, Johan Smit and Brits van Zyl. The inter-house events were also run on the mountain bike track. The junior boys ran a distance of 5km and the seniors 7km. Par ticipation this year was better than ever before and we were pleased at the turnout. In the junior raceWade Ambrose, a natural and very determined runner, took control from the start, with a gutsy Brits van Zyl pushing him from behind. Wade managed to hold onto his lead coming out of the valley and he won the race. The top 5 juniors: 1.Wade Ambrose (Finningley) 2. Brits van Zyl (Gillingham 3. Nathan Sheppard (Pembroke) 4. Keagan Foss (Finningley 5.Thomas Host (Finningley) In the senior event Daniel Marsden immediately raced to the front of the pack and led the way down into the conservancy with a very fit Johan Smit on his heels. Both boys were determined to lift the trophy. The final zigzagging climb from the lowest point up to the Spor tZone saw Johan’s fitness bearing fruit as he went past Daniel to eventually take the honours. The race for third place was hotly contested by James Kirsten, Joshua Dixon and Rowan Page. James managed to dig really deep to end 3rd overall. The top 5 seniors: 1. Johan Smit (Gillingham 2. Daniel Marsden (Finningley) 3. James Kirsten (Finningley 4. Joshua Dixon (Sheffield) 5. Rowan Page (Sheffield) Overall house results: 1st Gillingham 2nd Finningley 3rd Pembroke 4th Sheffield I would like to thank both Andrew Adie (captain) and Johan Smit (vicecaptain) for their loyal suppor t and commitment to the sport this year. Andrew, inspite of injury, continued to show commitment in his captaincy role. Johan was at all times a dedicated runner who led from the front. I must also commend Dylan Scott, Stephen Maritz and James Gray on their tenacity and general improvement this year. Rod de Villiers Cross country The season was another enjoyable and successful one for our cross country runners.
