Chronicle-2011

140 2NDTEAM “Legendary” is probably the word to describe the 2nd XI’s season. I have seldom coached a team that played with so much passion and enjoyment. They beat the teams they formally struggled against: Hilton 5-0; Michaelhouse 3-1; and the big achievement of the year, Maritzburg College 3-2 after being 2-0 down five minutes into the second half. This was a typical performance from a team that would not give up. They scored three unanswered goals in 15 minutes and then defended for the last five minutes to hand Maritzburg their only defeat of the season. The only blemishes were the draws against St Stithians and Northwood. Other good results were againstWestville 1-0, where Josh Dixon scored the winning goal of the season in the dying seconds of the game, Glenwood 1-0, Clifton 2-0 and DHS 7-0.The top goal scorer was Luke Peinke with 9 goals. The captain, Grant Marais, led by example giving nothing less than 100% and the players responded in kind. My sincere thanks and appreciation go to all the players for their support, commitment and co-operation, and to the players’ parents for their support. Besides the fact that we have enjoyed coaching and working with the boys, this team played with determination, discipline and dedication often producing exciting matches and goals. The enthusiasm at this level in 2011 necessitated the formation of a 4th team; this did not only provide us with a chance to choose players but also created competition, affording us the opportunity to play the best players instead of the available players. Congratulations must go to “Captain Fantastic” Jacques van der Merwe for a superb leadership job. In a nutshell, 2011 will go down in the books as a season of very pleasing memories.
