Chronicle-2011

This meeting resulted in the appointment of Barend Steyn as director of rugby with the responsibility of establishing a vision for the spor t and a distinctive pattern of play. Francois Lubbe was appointed manager of the high performance programme, with Cameron Buys as his assistant, to attend to the general condition of boys in the programme. A weekly training schedule was drawn up to ensure a balanced and workable programme for each individual. The training schedule was introduced in the four th term of 2010 and Swys de Bruin provided valuable material and skills sessions. This was then streamlined in the 1st term of 2011 in order to accommodate the summer sports and cultural programme. The “Verusco” analysis programme has been invaluable in our endeavours but needed careful explanation to both boys and coaching staff. The programme is a down-scaled version used by the Sharks and other franchises and is a remarkable user-friendly tool that was used throughout the season to ensure top quality coaching in all aspects of the modern game. A number of key observations emerged from this first implementation: modern ideas excite teenagers and the senior group in particular embraced the proposed pattern; in future we should only target the top 20 players in the junior age groups but we should also seriously consider sevens rugby for a small number of identified players in the third term as this will improve core skills. Kearsney continues to produce 20 teams for our Saturday fixtures. It is pleasing to see the commitment and effor t that these players are putting into the spor t. My thanks are extended in a number of areas to people who helped contribute to the success of the season: the medical team of San sisters, doctors, Kearsney first aiders, Brent Grimsley and the other physiotherapists; the Kearsney coaches for their dedication and suppor t;Taff Green and his team for the outstanding rugby festival; Paula Isaac and her group of photographers; Simon Hudson for his technical assistance with the first fifteen and all the parents for their suppor t. We are anticipating a great 2012 rugby season!
