Chronicle-2011

145 RUGBY 1ST TEAM We did everything to make Kearsney’s 90th season a memorable one. With five regular players from 2010 still available and young talented players entering the senior ranks the season promised to be exciting. The first fixture against George Campbell was a slightly nervous affair. The match marked an historical event: for the first time the first XV included three brothers. Robert was selected at fly half and his twin brothers Jean-Luc and Daniel in grade 10 served at flank and lock respectively. All fears and concerns of the twins not being able to handle the pressure were put at rest as Jean-Luc passed the ball to Daniel to score the first try of the season within a few minutes from kick off. Julian Bowman added an unconverted try from a wellrehearsed backline move to lead 10 – 6 at halftime. The Kearsney team battled against a strong head wind in the second half but James Lambert soon added a difficult long range penalty. Julian Bowman scored his second try of the match after following up a grubber kick by replacement fullback Michael Steel after a line movement from Kearney’s’ own 22 meter line. George Campbell used the tail wind with great effect and their strong pack of forwards eventually scored a converted try from a series of pick and driving plays. Resolute defence kept the opponents’ attack at bay to secure a 18 – 13 victory. The second fixture against DHS was our first home match and until half time it was an evenly contested affair. The Kearsney first half score consisted of three James Lambert penalties and the DHS ten points was from a penalty and a converted try scored from a counter attack and elusive running by their provincial fullback. Kearsney played well in the second half but could not breach the DHS defence. Until Cullen Collopy, Robert du Preez and Matthew Jones scored in quick succession, with two conversions by Sandile Kubeka. Our opponents were unable to add to their half time score and Kearsney deserved the 28 – 10 result.
