While results are important, it is the lessons learnt on the field that are most impor tant. The highlights of the season were good wins over Nor thwood, Hillcrest and Kloof. The boys found the back of the net on many occasions during those games, but consistency was lacking in terms of finishing off games. We lost against DHS, Hilton and Michaelhouse, when leading 2-1 with five minutes to play. Defensive lapses late in these games proved to be very costly. At the Kloof tournament, we played above ourselves and finished top of our group, undefeated, against traditionally top soccer schools. We lost on penalties in the Championship last 16 and went on to lose in the quarterfinals of the Plate section. This was a fantastic effor t as no Kearsney team has ever reached the knock-out phase of the Championship section. This was a young side that will improve next year. Congratulations go to Declan Ahern, who was selected for the KZN invitational U19 team and Greg Lockhar t-Ross, who was selected for the KZN invitational U17 team. This is not to say we didn’t experience a cer tain amount of success but rather that the team was characterised by youth: made up entirely of grade 11s. The focus on team-play, communication and structure saw a rapid increase in skills, however, times of learning are also characterised by difficulties and because players were called upon to play varying positions in order to compensate for injury, the overall tactics were not right for our opposition. As a result we suffered some narrow losses. But the team was dedicated and I looked forward to every practice and enjoyed working with them. Guy Mitchell RESULTS Played: 9 Won: 5 Lost: 4
