The oldest players are still only in grade 11 so we have another full season to look forward to next year. In March the side made their annual pilgrimage to the FNB St Andrews boys’ schools festival. The boys played some good squash against top opposition. It is always a good experience for the boys to play at altitude because the ball bounces more and the rallies last longer. The boys thus get to spend a lot more time on the cour t against stronger opposition than they might at sea level. Upon returning from Bloemfontein, the boys were competitive in the Top 8 series which involves the top squash playing schools in KZN. In the second term, the boys played in the KZN Southern Coastal league. This requires schools to play in 6 different leagues every Monday afternoon. The format allowed us to get most of our boys out on the cour ts in 8 teams of 4 who then played against most of the schools in the greater Durban area. The boys also competed in the Durban Men’s League. Marco Botha captained the side and the boys competed well in the 5th division. Although they battled initially with the cunning and guile of the older players, the boys soon adapted and by the end of the season they were beating teams quite convincingly that had given them a good drubbing in the first round. In the 4th term our side travelled to the Wynberg stayers festival in Cape Town. This was a really good opportunity for the boys to start preparing for the 2012 season. As this side will remain unchanged for 2012 (with the exception of some talented up and coming juniors who will soon be mounting a challenge) we look forward to seeing how they develop next year. The school champion and captain was Joshua Piggott. Joshua is a talented player who has worked well with the boys during the year. The U16 and U14 champions were James Kirsten and Callix Gray respectively. Squash is traditionally a sport that is played ‘around’ the major sports and I am always encouraged when boys decide to keep playing the game in the face of growing demands from other spor ting codes. I’d like to thank Simon Moore, Marco Botha and Brett van Rensburg for their help and support in terms of both coaching and instilling a love for the game in the boys. Andy Morgan Squash The 1st squash side remained largely unchanged from the previous season.
