Chronicle-2011

170 The swimmers are put under a lot of pressure to train and perform at galas with the winter sport pre-season training star ting earlier every year. In spite of this, Kearsney has become a very successful swimming school and has produced some outstanding results over the last couple of years. Kearsney once again produced an excellent result to win the Michaelhouse Invitational for the umpteenth time. There was hardly time for a breather and it was time for the Independent’s Schools Gala: which Kearsney has won nine out of the last ten years. But it was not to be this year, as current rivals Clifton College beat us into 2nd place by a single point. Next up was the Alan Bur t 10 Schools Gala, always a closely fought gala. Kearsney had to be satisfied with 3rd place after a 10-point disqualification resulted in a hefty points knock. Fur ther disappointment was to follow when we were disqualified in no less than 3 events at the prestigious Top 8 Gala and were comprehensively beaten into 3rd place by Clifton. But we ended with a bang when we managed to produce one of our best performances of the shor t season finishing 2nd behindWestville at the season-ending Durban and Districts Gala. The highlight and talk of the evening was undoubtedly the performance of our open team who, not only won every one of their 5 events but also broke the record in four of them. This performance ensured that this age group went through their 5 years unbeaten at any gala – a performance unlikely to be repeated for a very long time.
