We qualified for the quar ter finals at the Clifton tournament for the first time this year, and were unlucky not to make the semi-final. At the KZNTop 10 tournament we were in ‘the pool of death’ again and finished third. Thus, we could only manage a 5th place overall. Because many of the boys also play 1st or 2nd team Rugby, pre-season training was limited. But our physical strength this season helped tremendously on both defence and attack. This enabled the team to put a lot of pressure on the outside shooters as we never needed to worry about dropping on the hole. Our weakness was our finishing. Too often we found ourselves in good goal scoring positions but unable to score the goal. I believe that this is due to inexperience and that in the future the boys will learn the requisite calm and score the goal. I must point out a few key players in the team: Brendan Clements; Murray McDougall; Nic Colepepper and Brett Welsh. They led the youngsters well and often took it upon themselves to score the crucial goals to help the team win. Daniel du Preez was our top goal scorer and troubled many teams’ defence with his physical attack strength. Doug Campbell RESULTS Played: 22 Won: 13 Lost: 8 Drew: 1 2NDTEAM The team had a very successful season. It was evident that the players worked superbly as a team and played with a natural flair. I was very pleased with the fitness and skill level of the players. Unfor tunately, we suffered two losses: against Clifton by one goal and against Michaelhouse by two goals. I am proud to mention the six stalwar ts of the team who displayed tremendous commitment and dedication: Grant Marais, Kyle Louw, Chad Dunnett, Murray Polkinghorne, Rober t du Preez and Brett Walsh. These matrics have played in the 2nd team for three years and played 26 matches – in all that time drawing 1 game and losing only 2. I hope that these young men will pursue their water polo in the future.
