Shelley Yiroll email shelley@yiroll.co.za While it is true to say that in any group of matrics there is always a boy at the top; it is not always true that the Dux is of the calibre of Nicol Pirow. His final results are testament to his brilliance and perseverance: 8 distinctions and 6 subjects in the top 5% of all IEB students. He deserves the IEB title ‘outstanding student’. “It doesn’t just happen,” says Nicol, “you won’t achieve much trying to study with a phone in your hand or watching a movie.” In his years at Kearsney it’s Adam Rogers who left the strongest impression: “I enjoyed spending time with him. In speaking to him you learn knowledge that you can do something with.” Surprisingly, Nicol’s high moment at the College came during the Battle of the Bands and not in the classroom. “I taught myself to play the bass guitar because I’m a heavy metal fan.”Then he joined a band with some mates and entered the competition. Winning was never the objective; it was all about the experience. Nicol will be moving on to Stellenbosch University and studying Chemical Engineering. We wish him everything of the best and thank him for choosing Kearsney. It was only “more than likely” that Nicol would come to the College and we’re privileged he did. Dux Scholar Nicol Pirow Luke embodied everything that a kearsney boy stands for. His selflessness in the midst of his suffering was something to behold, the fact that he cared more for the people around him than his own well-being is truly awe inspiring. He was a role-model, a best friend and a brother to all at Kearsney. Luke fully comprehended, accepted and even embraced his illness, to such an extent that right up until the day he died he lived his life on his own terms, to the fullest and with no regrets. We are honoured and privileged to have been blessed enough to have spent five years at Kearsney with Luke. I will be forever grateful for having known him as I did. Nobody else crossed my mind when the time came to vote for the Edwin Henwood Trophy. We miss you Luke! Declan Hearn LUKE NORRIS Edwin Henwood Trophy In 1960, when Mr Henwood donated this trophy, he suggested that the recipient of the award should demonstrate the following qualities: he should display scholastic achievement; success in spor t; set a good example to his peers in his leadership style; be diligent in his work and improve; uphold Christian principles and display courage in overcoming difficulties. Each year, the Kearsney community considers the boys leaving the College and vote for a wor thy recipient. This year, Kearsney unanimously chose Luke Norris. of 201
