Chronicle-2011

45 This page is sponsored by: FOUNDATION Thank you to Kearsney’s new and on-going loyal partners for their loyalty and support during a particularly tough economic period. Kearsney’s 90 year history is a remarkable story of a community with a strong culture of giving and we celebrate those who have made Kearsney what it is today. During 2011 there were 72 suppor ters who collectively contributed just on R2 million to a wide variety of core Kearsney initiatives (not including extensive suppor t raised for festivals and sport and cultural tours.) Recent research shows this growing culture of giving amongst the rich and the ‘ordinary man on the street’ in South Africa too. A new repor t by BoE Private Clients shows that 93,5% of the rich gave time, money or goods in philanthropic acts in 2010. 24% of these gave goods, products or services. While tax breaks seem like an obvious motivation for giving, the research respondents cited a variety of reasons for giving. For 43% the motivation was to ‘make a difference’, 30% said they cared about the cause and 29% said they wanted to give back to their community. A family tradition of giving was cited by 9% of respondents while 7% said they wanted to set an example for their children or family. While up to 39% gave to religious institutions. Non-profit organisations received 69% and 3% went to political parties. Kearsney clearly fits the bill for our individual and corporate donors. Par tly because, as a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO 80-11-13-2570) and Non-Profit Organisation (024882-NPO), gifts of up to 10% taxable income in SA may be deducted in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act. But mostly because Kearsney is close to their heart and part of their family, Kearsney positively contributes to the future of this country, and as an organisation is trusted, well governed and accountable. Corporates are increasingly motivated to contribute to society. It makes business sense and is increasingly an issue of compliance if you consider for example the Broad-Based Foundation Giving brings not just opportunity and resources but encouragement to strive for excellence in all that is Kearsney. ”Do not store up for yourselves treasures on ear th, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your hear t will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
