70 The boys had to design a key ring with specifications, and then present a set of working drawings. Working with wood is an investigation, where boys research the origins and proper ties of wood and studied the different types of wood, tools, adhesives, joining methods, safety and first aid. In order to work with wood, one has to really understand the material properly. Space Exploration was studied in some detail again this year. An interesting aspect of this module of work was the space disasters. The boys were encouraged to “build the future by learning from our mistakes” when designing their own space shuttle and mission badge. These tasks had a South African theme that inspired a local design flavour. The grade 9 boys once again studied structures: the Coliseum, Stonehenge, the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building and Buckingham Palace. The seven wonders of the ancient world were also covered in an effor t to expose the boys to the path covered in Engineering Design. Structural failure was extensively discussed and researched. The boys were also exposed to modern structural wonders that exist today like the Jumeriah Palms in Dubai,The CNTower,The Millau Viaduct and The Lupu Bridge in China. Mechanical systems remains a very popular module as does the construction and destruction of theWorld Trade Centre. The boys designed their own version of a replacement for theWTC. Many interesting and practical solutions were presented and the boys were completely fascinated with conspiracy theories for some time after the project concluded.
