Chronicle-2011

79 ACADEMIC Review Not only is the subject relevant to most career choices but it’s also enjoyable. It is one of the few subjects where boys leave school with a real world skill. They have the knowledge and skills to start their own software development companies and earn a living. A large number of IT students have also gone on to study computer science at university. The year was very successful as the matrics created some brilliant games and business applications and we expect them to achieve good results in finals. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them and I wish them luck with their studies next year. Twenty-three boys have chosen to take IT next year which is fantastic relative to other schools in the country. I’m sure that they will be very happy with their choice. Matt Conradie Information Technology IT is an extremely useful subject. Our main goal is always to prepare matriculates for their final examination and judging by their trials performance – traditionally higher than the final examination – we expect good results from this group. The standard of First Additional Language is becoming more and more elevated and it is clear that non-mother tongue students need to practise application if we are to continue producing excellent results. We would like to congratulate Ntobeko Sibisi for scooping the isiZulu prize this year and we have no doubt that he will do us proud in his finals. It is becoming a trend for Kearsney to dominate the isiZulu cultural evenings held in the region. This year’s isiZulu evening was help at St Mary’s where each school presented a performance. The Kearsney grade 10 and 11 boys performed a traditional gumboot dance, two modified choir pieces and two modern dances. When the boys left the stage to thundering cheers and ear-spitting screams and applause in was clear that they had achieved success. The depar tment is sailing strongly in the right direction and keeping up to date with the educational and assessment changes taking place within the IEB and at national levels. We continue to attend assessment courses, re-visit notes, methodologies and exchange assessment tasks with other schools in order to provide a competitive standard. Bongi Ndaba isiZulu In retrospect 2011 continued the goals, challenges and achievements of the department. We would like to try programming applications for Blackberry and Android next year and try our hand at robotics The depar tment is sailing strongly in the right direction Matt Brown grade 10
