Chronicle-2011

82 and Conversational Zulu, Rebel Music, 3D Computer Modelling, Music Appreciation, Spor t Science, Creative Drawing and Middle Earth Literature. Over 25 boys wrote the SIAT International benchmarking examinations in English, Science and Mathematics. These examinations are developed by Education Assessment Australia and are written by candidates from all over the world. The Kearsney results are benchmarked against 8000 students in the English paper, 13000 in the Science paper and 5000 in the Maths paper. As usual the Kearsney boys fared well in all three assessments. Special congratulations go to the following boys who obtained high distinctions (top 1%) and distinctions (top 10%): Ivan Crockart: English (high distinction) and Maths (distinction) and Science (distinction). MatthewVan Heusden: Science (high distinction). Myles Lundall: Science (distinction). Neil Lillelund: Science (distinction). Keagan Loader : Maths (distinction). Ruben van Aswegen: English (distinction). Five grade 9 boys managed to complete their Pilgrim awards this year: Neil Lillelund (distinction), Matthew Fyvie (distinction), Andries Schoeman (distinction), Jeremy Maarschalk and Daniel Pons. Special mention must be made of the following projects undertaken during the course of the year: Matthew Fyvie’s visit to the Chimp Centre at Nelspruit and his hike toWonder Valley Cave in the Drakensberg. Neil Lillelund’s 98% for the spiritual test and his visits to the Mackenzie TB Hospital, iPhithi Nature Reserve and the iThemba and Intogela schools; Daniel Pons’ inspirational cross-cultural experience with Thobane Zikalala who was born with spinal bifida and his memorable hike to the unnamed cave in the nor thern Berg; Jeremy Maarschalk’s cross cultural association with Chen De from Shanghai and his somewhat unintentionally lengthened hike to Pholela cave in the southern Berg; Andries Schoeman’s hike to Zulu Cave and visit to the Malvern Children’s Home for the Underprivileged. All of these were tremendous experiences for the boys and they can now wear their badges with pride. I am pleased to confirm that virtually every single grade 8 and 9 boy completed some community service this year and most were also involved in a club and spor t each term. Involvement is the key to happiness here at Kearsney. Finally, I would like to thank the two grade heads, André van Zyl and Mike Albers, for the efficient way in which they coordinated matters this year. Rod de Villiers
