Consequently it is most gratifying to note that our numbers are steadily increasing. In 2010 we had 50 Science matrics and in 2012 we will have over 100 boys taking Science in grade 10. It is clear that the boys have come to realise the impor tance of taking Science. The grade 9 Natural Science boys were set the task of identifying a Science related problem and designing experiments that would provide answers to their problem. Since the boys could select their own topics they produced a wide range of innovative and well-designed investigations. In most cases the experimental work was done over a three week period during their Natural Science lessons which enabled them to make use of data sensors and other equipment available in the laboratories. Alex Platts, JJ Lenferna de la Motte and Kevin Murray represented Kearsney in the Mintek Science Quiz where they competed against over 70 schools from KwaZulu-Natal. They are to be congratulated on being placed 3rd in this closely fought contest. The matric pupils from KwaNtabeni Comprehensive High School attended Science lessons at Kearsney once a week throughout the year. Teaching using Smar tBoard technology adds a new dimension to their Science as they are able to view animations and video clips of concepts that they have previously only read about. Wherever possible we try to include a practical element in the lessons, where the pupils have hands-on experience of manipulating apparatus and also have access to computers. We are very grateful to work in an environment with such superb facilities and are appreciative of the suppor t we enjoy. We remain indebted to our super-efficient laboratory assistant,Tilly Kistensamy, who gives selflessly of her time and exper tise. My personal thanks go to my colleagues for their cheerful co-operation no matter how great the demand; they are a dedicated, competent team who are always willing to embrace new ideas and technology.
