93 AWARDS TheWarring Music trophy (for outstanding solo performance): Warren Vernon-Driscoll The Music practical prize (for the highest mark in the external examinations):Wesley Lazenby Music Honours: Mandilakhe Cebanto,Wesley Lazenby THE ARTS @ Kearsney THE ORCHESTRA The orchestra was in a transitional phase throughout 2011. A strong contingent of junior players has joined the ensemble and this will provide a good foundation for coming years. The repertoire was somewhat limited but the group did not disappoint with their rendition of David Foster’s Winter Games and a Fusion/Jazz/ Funk composition called Session No.1 Earlier in the year the ensemble attempted a medley from the Lord of the Rings, but this was abandoned as we did not have enough instruments to cover the extensive orchestration. Performances included the open weekend, speech day and a joint evening of school music ensembles hosted by Highbury Preparatory. Some of our orchestral musicians achieved high marks in external examinations and many performed regularly at our supper theatres, official events and the Carol Services. INTER HOUSE MUSIC This is one of the fiercest competitions on the Kearsney calendar and has become synonymous with energetic performances and high entertainment value. Our senior music students are in charge of their respective houses’ efforts. Each house presents a choir (of no less than 20 boys in multiple voice parts), a solo item, a duet and a rock band. The choirs rehearse for 4 weeks to perfect their routines. The Gillingham choir secured a first place in this section with their rendition of AnyWayYou Want It by Journey. Two junior boys from Pembroke, Khanyiso Booi and Bheki Hlongwane, were the highlight of the duet category and matric leaver WarrenVernon-Driscoll won the Solo category for Sheffield. After this close competition it was up to the house band to clench the title for their house, and all houses presented items of high calibre. Sheffield won the trophy for the third consecutive year. MUSIC STUDIO Our music studio runs at high revolution throughout the year, with boys taking lessons in guitar, bass guitar, drum kit, saxophone, flute, violin, classical piano, modern piano, classical voice and contemporary voice. The enthusiastic staff work hard to inspire the budding musician in each boy but the onus is still on each individual to practice regularly and make steady progress. A new initiative this year was the termly concert at which any students can present a piece they are working on – an exciting but nerve wracking prospect for most boys. Our philosophy is that “music makes the man” and this is clearly evidenced when boys, who are equally strong in the classroom and on the sports field, walk onto the stage to perform a piece of music.
