Chronicle-2011

95 The growing number of boys choosing the subject has afforded the Depar tment the opportunity to create various platforms from which the boys can shine. This feisty fun-loving group grabbed every oppor tunity to perform, jumping right in at the beginning of the year with the everpopular inter house play competition. Under veils of secrecy, and cloaks of mist, the boys took to scripting, directing, designing and rehearsing their original plays. Their hard work culminated in truly successful performances, providing good enter tainment for the audience and a wonderful space for the performers. The highlight of the year was the two week tour to the USA which will remain a special memory for the boys who were lucky to have had this once in a life time opportunity. The boys were treated to two great South African plays this year : Tshepang at Hilton College, where they had the privilege of a discussion with Lara FootNewton, the playwright and director ; and Greig Coetzee’s internationally acclaimed White Men with Weapons at The Hexagon Theatre. This was a par ticular hit with the boys and left a lasting impression. It is hear t-warming to see the boys grow in confidence, whether it is the energetic grade 8s in their choral verse presentation of The Jabberwocky, or the lively grade 9s giving their heart and soul in their performances of From Screen to Stage. The senior students show maturity and many are natural performers who grace the stage with remarkable presence. Special thanks are extended to the parents society who so generously assisted with the purchase of a portable lighting system. Combined with our existing sound system and the stage and flats that are on the cards for next year, we are looking forward to many more successful evenings of enter tainment in the Drama studio. Ulaetha Singh AWARDS Honours Patrick Bell Drama 2011 heralded new and exciting opportunities for the many enthusiastic Drama boys. THE ARTS @ Kearsney
