The grade 10 Drama boys held a showcase of their first term’s work in March. In their study of Greek Drama, they had fun creating modern dithyrambs (choral singing of hymns) where they sang in honour of their favourite pop stars. Elvis Presley, Eminem and Bob Marley made appearances performing classical choral verse, monologues and scenes from Oedipus Rex. This play, about a child destined to kill his father and marry his mother lends itself to humorous adaptions and the audience was in stitches. Vaughn Pearse and Joshua Brown entertained as the comperes and kept the audience informed with their well-scripted two man show. The grade 11 showcase, compered by Jonathan Deighton and Greig Lockhart-Ross, was held in September. Boys performed a number of pieces from classical plays like A Doll’s House, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Island. Many of their performances would have made the original stars proud. On a lighter note, skits from Black Mamba and Anchorman proved to be very amusing. The audience was moved by an engaging contemporary movement piece that explored the themes of Apartheid. Following the grade 12 IEB practical examination in October, the Drama students showcased their practical examination pieces: including pieces selected from Shakespeare; South African plays like Master Harold and the Boys and Woza Albert!; the works of contemporary American playwright Christopher Durang and films like Inglorious Bastards and Sherlock Holmes. The parents were most impressed by the standard of the work presented and by the confidence and commitment of their sons. Ulaetha Singh
