Chronicle-2011

97 Visual Ar t underwent a growth spur t this year with almost twenty Grade 10s joining the department. As a result, the classroom acquired a few extra computers, worktops and fitting changes to accommodate the growing numbers. We also had to cope with four extremely large abstract paintings by James Copland. Visitors are warned upon entering that creative minds are rarely tidy, but out of the seeming chaos beautiful ar t works have been born and I must say that I look forward to meeting the enthusiasm of the grade 10s and 11s as much as they look forward to their lessons. Their creativity seems to be limitless – as is their energy, enthusiasm and mess! The grade 10s made artworks of their respective boarding houses for auction at an Old Boys dinner in June. The boys were encouraged to work in a medium of their choice and to interpret the theme as they wished. The resultant works generated much interest and is currently on display in the boarding houses. In April Tracey van den Aardweg and I joined KimThunder to do a basic digital photographic course. Feeling very inspired, I devoted much time in the second and third terms to developing the photographic skills of my students. Our photography culminated in a photographic exhibition at the Upbeat festival. The exhibition was open to members of the school community and public. We had an overwhelming response with literally hundreds of entries. The Ar t highlight every year is the grade 12 exhibition and this year was no exception. The seven candidates and their work were notable for originality and individuality. The boys worked in a range of media including large scale abstract works, computer generated imagery, wire sculpture, origami and more traditional ceramics and graphic drawing. It is with much gratitude that I pay my respects to the parents committee, who par tially funded the purchase of new display screens. These are currently housed in the foyer of the auditorium and are used to display ar t on a regular basis. I would also like to acknowledge the maintenance staff for painting of the auditorium foyer and all the doors in the Music Ar t and Drama block to give our space a fresh new look. It is these small acts that revitalise us and allow us to feel valued within the Kearsney community.
