Chronicle-2019

102 Our paddlers must be congratulated on the way that they conducted themselves both on and off the water. With a rigorous training program, our boys are expected to perform, and they certainly transferred their efforts in training into races. Kearsney held their own against the teams of Michaelhouse and Maritzburg College whose numbers dwarf the numbers of Kearsney. This group of determined and committed athletes finished 4th overall in the inter-schools’ competition, just missing out on a podium position by a single point. The top four results for the 2019 season were as follows: Michaelhouse (896), Maritzburg College (895), Michaelhouse B (863) and Kearsney (862). CANOEING The highlight of our season has been the significant development of a valuable core of junior paddlers, especially Grade 8s who have been prepared to work hard to master the skills in this extremely technical spor t. Fur ther to this, our senior paddlers have mentored these young boys in developing mutual respect for each other and recognising growth as well as per formance. The annual Fish River Canoe Tour highlighted the strong connections that these boys will have with the club and we were for tunate to have several novice paddlers being afforded the oppor tunity to paddle in this exciting event. Old boys Brendan Cooper and Luke Plotts once again availed themselves to take an U14 paddler in a K3. Our old boys contribute significantly to the development of our team. The father and son combinations of Luka and Kosta Koumantarakis (FISH), Andy and Jack Lund (UMKO), Ben and Wim van Herzeele (DRAK) and Luke and Nick Sacco (DUSI) were privileged to paddle respective the races with each other, forming lifelong memories.
