104 Special Awards: KZN U19 Coca Cola Khaya Majola Provincial Selections: Jordan Bamber, Joshua Stocks, Cade Carmichael Honours Awards: Jordan Bamber, Joshua Stocks, Cade Carmichael Full Colours: Jared Brien, Chase Kelly Half Colours: Jared Uys Our ‘A’ sides were involved in several festivals in the year and they acquitted themselves well. The 1st XI travelled down to Bishops at the start of the year for the traditional pre-season Independent Schools Festival, as well as attending the St Albans Festival over the March and April holidays. Added to this, they hosted Wellington College from the UK who were touring in the country and then started the latter half of the year with the traditional Michaelmas Cricket Festival up in Pietermaritzburg. An U17 stayers’ side was invited to attend a “stayers” festival up at Michaelhouse during the Michaelmas holidays and they gained valuable experience to take forward into the latter half of the cricket season. The U15A side travelled down to Grey High School for their annual festival and, despite being labelled “underdogs”, they had an extremely successful festival, pitted against some of the strongest schools in the country. The U14A side took part in the Charl van Rooyen Festival which was hosted by DHS this year. The team was extremely fortunate to play all their matches at Kearsney and emerged unbeaten for the duration of the festival which was a fantastic achievement. Following rigorous trials over the course of the year we were delighted with three players being selected for the KwaZulu-Natal Coastal U19 side: Jordan Bamber, Cade Carmichael and Joshua Stocks. We congratulate these players on their selection and wish them all the very best in the Coca-Cola National Week to be played in the midlands in December. CRICKET OVERVIEW 2019 proved successful for Cricket as a sport at Kearsney with many teams progressing and improving throughout the year. From a somewhat shaky start to the season, the teams stabilised and blossomed in the latter half of the year. This was, by and large, as a result of the tremendous emphasis placed on hard work by the coaches. We are still blessed at Kearsney to have many passionate, dedicated and experienced coaches who can transfer their experience and love for the game to the boys under their charge. Our splendid facilities are the envy of many schools in the province and we certainly made use of them throughout the year. Mr Ayanda Peter and his dedicated ground staff are to be congratulated for a fine job this year, ensuring that our boys played on the finest of wickets and outfields. Our facilities are in constant demand and we played host this year to the Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and Final of the Coastal leg of the national T20 competition for schools. Our fields are also regularly used for KwaZulu-Natal coastal trials for U15, U17 and U19 age groups. All in all, the College played 140 matches throughout the year, winning 83, losing 56 and then one match ending in a draw. This represents a win loss ratio of 59%, which was slightly down on 2018, but which remains satisfactory, considering that we face many schools with far greater depth and numbers. Of more importance than results is the personal growth that many of our cricketers underwent throughout the year, which I believe is far more beneficial than claiming so-called “bragging rights” or taking subjective school rankings seriously.
