Chronicle-2019

109 2nd XI Cricket The 2nd XI was a team in continual flux in the first term. This was reflected in somewhat disappointing results, but the signs of better things to come were evident in the fight and discipline shown. Losing to Hilton by 1 wicket, despite some heroics from Thomas Constable stands out as a watershed moment for the team. The fourth term was a different proposition altogether with a formidable batting line-up ensuring that the 2nd XI was largely untroubled by chasing whatever total was set. The team was strengthened by the inclusion of several u16 players who were able to buy into the team culture and perform to the best of their abilities. A lot of credit must be given to the leadership group of Grade 12s who encouraged the newer members of the team and fostered an atmosphere of encouragement which allowed all members of the team to show their value. Step forward Daniel de Kock who scored 93* against St Charles College, Ross Savage making an unbeaten 107* against Durban High School in sweltering conditions or Bryce van der Merwe producing dangerous movement off the seam with the new ball and Matt McMurray laying waste to the Michaelhouse top order, starting his spell with wicket. Several players made the transition to the 1st XI over the course of the year, having put in key performances in the 2nd XI. These included Jean-Luc Talbot and Rubin Rheeder as well as Thomas Constable with his accurate leg spin and gritting batting. Matthew Murray is firmly embedded in the 1st XI on the back of his bowling performances and Nicholas Weyer and Matthew D’Eramo will be knocking on the door but have had the misfortune of injury holding them back. A big thank you from Mr Jon Robinson and Mr Matthew Saville for a fantastic season where, win or lose, the long Saturdays were made worthwhile by the attitude of the boys in our care.
