Chronicle-2019

110 Cricket 3rd XI Cricket Regular players: Grant Craze, Luke Gibbon, Matthew Hind, Warren Miller (Captain), Ross Parkinson, Janko Roets, Joshua Soanes, Adam Stonier, Nicholas Taylor, Luke van Eeden, Wynand Vermaak, Andrew Watt (Captain) The 3rd Team were joined by members of the U16A team at the start of the 4th Term. Mr Hubert van Ellewee and I were keen to see how the juniors and seniors would mix in the 3rd team setup. Much to our surprise, the boys worked hard at camaraderie and their cricketing skills. Practices were filled with banter, but the boys worked hard at sharpening their cricketing skills. The highlight of the season must be the cracker against Glenwood on 12 October on Matterson Field. Kearsney won the toss and elected to bat. We knew our batsmen must make the best of any loose bowling by the opposition as their bowlers were very fast and accurate. Our batsmen settled down on the wicket and Matthew Hind was the top scorer in the Kearsney team with his useful contribution of 54 runs. Grant Craze (29) played a supporting role and their partnership of 59 runs was a gem. We finished the innings on 197/4 after the allotted 20 overs. Our bowlers were on fire from the first delivery and soon wickets began to fall around their top batsman. The Kearsney side’s fielding was outstanding and Glenwood’s big hitters could not find the necessary gaps. Kearsney College won the match comfortably, by 84 runs. On 07 September we played Michaelhouse away. Kearsney batted first and scored 123/9 in 20 overs. Calvin Davis contributed 30 runs with the bat. Michaelhouse were bowled out for 93 runs. Joshua Soanes and Luke Gibbon each claimed three wickets. (Soanes 3/9) (Gibbon 3/12). On 14 September we travelled to St Charles College. Kearsney lost the toss and SCC opted to bat first. St Charles scored a handy 182/9 in their 30 overs and the Kearsney boys knew the game was on. With the bat, Kearsney’s Luke Gibbon (48), Calvin Davis (47) and Matthew Hind (37) laid a solid foundation for the team’s victory by 3 wickets. Our penultimate fixture for the summer sport season was a T20 encounter against Durban High School at Kearsney College. DHS batted first and were bowled out for 46 runs. Wynand Vermaak (3/10) and Nicholas Taylor (3/18) made it difficult for the boys from Durban to score runs. In Kearsney’s innings, the opening pair of Warren Miller and Derick Marshall achieved the total in 3.3 overs. Our last fixture of the season was against our rivals from Hilton College. Kearsney batted first and scored 167 runs. Outstanding performances with the bat came from Warren Miller (64) and Grant Craze (34). Hilton College were only allowed to score 120/9 runs in their 20 overs. Wynand Vermaak (4/20) and Nicholas Taylor (3/18) were the pick of the bowlers. Kearsney College won the match by 47 runs. All in all, a very impressive set of results. I would like to thank all the players for their positivity during the season and the parents for their faithful support.
