113 CRICKET UNDER U16A Back row: Matthew McMurray, Ross Parkinson Middle Row: Wynand Vermaak, Dean Gibbs, Bryce van der Merwe, Joshua Soanes, Luke van Eeden, Adam Stonier Front row: Daniel de Kock, Mr Hubert van Ellewee, Calvin Davis (Captain), Mr Thinus Els, Rubin Rheeder Cricket U16A CRICKET The U16A team showcased much of talent and form after a successful U15 year and Mr Hubert van Ellewee and I were keen to sharpen their cricketing skills even more so that they could make the step up to topflight cricket. The boys were always motivated at practices and often took it upon themselves to do individual skills sharpening before coaches’ instruction took place. The coaches admired this, and it showed that the team really wanted to do well during the season. Unfortunately, our first two scheduled matches against Durban High School and Clifton College were cancelled due to inclement weather. Normal fixtures resumed thereafter, and we were set to play a very strong Westville Boys’ High team. In the 45 over match Westville posted 242/8. Kearsney could only manage to score 172 runs in reply, and we went down by 70 runs. The highlight of the season must be the nail-biter against Hilton College on Matterson Field. Kearsney College won the toss and elected to bat. We knew our batsmen had to make the best of the loose ball bowled by the opposition as their bowlers were very fast and accurate. Our batsmen settled down on the wicket and Dean Gibbs was the top scorer for the team with his useful contribution of 54 runs. Ross Parkinson (28) played a supporting role and their partnership of 95 runs was a gem. We finished the innings on 171/7 after the allotted 50 overs. Next to the crease was Hilton College. Our bowlers were on fire from the first delivery and soon wickets began to fall around their top batsman, Christopher Pistorius. He scored a handy 59 runs, but it was not enough to get the victory and Kearsney College emerged victorious by 78 runs. At the game against Maritzburg College at home on Matterson Field, Kearsney College batted first and could only manage 95 all out in 27.5 overs. Matthew McMurray contributed 33 runs with his bat. Maritzburg College batted next and scored 98/4 in 16.5 overs. Joshua Soanes made a positive contribution with the ball by claiming 3/18 in his 5.5. overs. Our last fixture for the summer sport season was a double-header against Northwood School and St Charles College on the SCC Oval. The boys were excited at the prospect of this fixture, as a winner would be determined at the end of the day.
