Chronicle-2019

114 The first order of business was to play St Charles College who won the toss and elected to bat ,scoring a defendable total of 136/7 in their 20 overs. Kearsney College responded by making 137/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Dean Gibbs impressed with the bat and made 52 runs which helped his team achieve a 6-wicket victory. That afternoon we played a very determined Northwood High School side. Northwood won the toss opting to bat first. The pitch was a batsman’s paradise and Northwood scored 129/6 in 20 overs. Ross Parkinson can be very proud of his 3 wickets for 11 runs. Kearsney College batted next and while we struggled at the beginning of the run chase. The team consolidated and we managed to put 131/8 on the scoreboard. Calvin Davis is congratulated for his 54-run contribution to the Kearsney run chase. Kearsney won the match by 2 wickets. The latter half of the year saw the U16 age group fall away and many of the players were absorbed into open teams. I would like to thank all the players for their positivity during the season and the parents for their faithful and loyal support. The boys nevertheless rallied around a core group of players and, despite some major setbacks—including a 100-run and nine-wicket loss to Westville Boys’ High School and Maritzburg College respectively—always made sure they enjoyed themselves out in the middle. The season ended with a double-header T20 fixture against Northwood High School and St. Charles College in Pietermaritzburg. Chasing a formidable target of 151 set by Northwood High School, Kearsney College crossed the finish line with only two wickets and a ball to spare thanks to the pinch-hitting skills of David Willington and Ben Robertson. The game against St. Charles College was set to be a carbon copy of the victory over Northwood until the middle and lower order came unstuck in the fading light and were bowled out well short of the target. It was nevertheless a nail-biting end to a tough season of cricket, and the boys are to be commended for the high level of enthusiasm they maintained throughout the term.
