Chronicle-2019

116 Top run scorer for the season was the captain, Callum McKeown with 422 runs off 446 balls at an average of 42.2. The top wicket taker was Noah Futter with 23 wickets at a very tidy average of 13. Altogether the boys enjoyed a fantastic season of cricket. They learnt the importance of patience, application and eventually self-belief. The team that finished the season was a completely different beast to the one that began it. And ultimately that is what team sports are about; becoming better together. Special mention should be made of Andrew Roden whose powerful approach to batting resulted in several standout performances and some neat wicket-keeping to boot. Tristan Roos bowled with pace and aggression, but more importantly, was accurate in the lines that he bowled. The spin arsenal was led by Matthew Gray and John Eastes, both of whom were cunning and bold in their attack. MJ Mcengwa was exceptional in his fielding efforts and added great value to the team. Some good wins were achieved over Northwood High School, St Charles College (twice), Glenwood High School and DHS. Credit must be given to the team-players who consistently gave of their best efforts at practice and in matches yet were not always given a chance to bat or bowl. As coach, I am appreciative of these players and they can be proud of themselves. Results: Played 9, Won 5, Lost 4 Mr Matthew Boote Coach Cricket U15C CRICKET Regular players: Jordan Balkisson, Julian Daws (Captain and wicket-keeper), Siphosethu Msomi, Tristan Reeves, Sani Sawuti, Callum Shillaw, Matthew Smith, Paul Swanepoel, Sekoala Toloane, Joshua Tomaz, Benjamin van Herzeele, Connor Walters This season was a roller-coaster but as the season progressed, the boys become stronger and more unified as a team. I am elated with the successes we experienced. Our goals for the year were to work hard and have fun, to improve individual skill levels, and provide our opposition with tough games every week, and we succeeded. Our team was fortunate to have a spread of skills, not relying on one or two boys to carry the team with their performances. Some of the highlights from the season include Siphosethu Msomi’s 50 runs vs Hilton College, Ben van Herzeele’s 3 wickets for 4 runs in 2 overs vs DHS and 31 runs n.o. vs Maritzburg College, Paul Swanepoel’s 52 vs Glenwood and 30 vs St Charles, Julian Daws’ 31 vs St Charles and 51 n.o.. vs Hillcrest High, and Callum Shillaw’s 77 n.o. vs Hillcrest High. Players not mentioned here contributed exceptionally to the restriction of runs in the field, often putting their bodies on the line for their teammates. I would like to thank the parents for their unrelenting support and the trust they placed in me for their sons’ cricketing careers. Many boys have wonderful attitudes to hard work, which will only help to improve their cricketing skills, and this is directly from the support received from parents. Boys, thank you for the banter, for your dedication and for all the unexpected moments of brilliance. This was a very special team and I will remember coaching you for years to come.
