117 Cricket U14A CRICKET The U14A cricket side of 2019 enjoyed a successful season, losing only one game over the course of the year. This record saw the side beating strong opposition in the form of Westville Boys’ High School, Hilton College, Hoërskool Waterkloof, Grey High School and St Andrew’s College Grahamstown during the season. Highlights of the season would have to be the away win over Hilton College in the first term, as well as the team’s unbeaten run during the Charl van Rooyen U14A Cricket Festival where they comfortably put away some very strong cricket sides. This team was most comfortable chasing down totals, finding it easier to bat towards a target rather than setting one. This strategy only failed once in the disappointing loss to St Charles College away in the third term. The batting line-up was long but, as is often the case with under 14s, fragile, and the team relied heavily on a few batsmen to score the bulk of the runs. These attributes, combined with a really good work ethic and desire to improve, saw this team obtain the results they did this year and should hold them in good stead as they move up through the age groups. The boys were well-led by Hayden Bishop and Michael de Beer as captain and vice-captain, both of whom have a very good understanding of the game. It has been a privilege coaching this very talented team and we wish them all the best for their cricketing futures.
