Chronicle-2019

125 2nd Hockey Team The 2nd XI enjoyed a short, but intense, season with a team comprising a mix of Matric and Grade 11 boys. Starting without a seasoned goalkeeper impacted on their confidence levels. Chris Howard-Browne and Saffin van Straaten stepped up, volunteering to play in the goals to give the side a fighting chance. The team’s willingness to learn, tenacity and unwavering spirit set them apart throughout a difficult season. Many matches came down to the wire and could have been victories in any other year, but the team often found themselves on the back foot early on, relying on their fighting spirit to achieve. The midfield players made up of Cameron Nel, Thomas Painting, Jordan Baker and Michael Smith enjoyed synchronicity proving extremely powerful going forward. Although their defensive play was sometimes lacking, they linked up well with the strikers and were not scared to shoot at goals. Cameron Nel covered kilometres on the turf, inspiring the other midfielders to greater heights. While all the strikers scored at some point, they lacked the killer touch and consistency in the circle. Kyle Potter, supported by Alex Swanepoel, organised things well, ensuring the players bought into the culture of the team. Some players earned caps for the 1st XI side, seeing their hard work rewarded. The players always gave 100 percent, enjoyed practices and demonstrated passion. Thank you to Mr Greg Thomson, the team manager, for all the work behind the scenes.
