Chronicle-2019

126 3rd Hockey Team Regular players: Kamo Bikwane, Matthew Bolton, Tahir Budhai, Luke Dungan, Ezekiel Falkson, Murray Gibbon, Judah Gibson, Callum Hobden, Christopher Howard-Browne (Goalkeeper), Xander Kapsimalis, Joshua Mathews, Matthew Rebelo, Matthew Strauss, Kian Taylor, Phiko Tyeso, Tariq Vally While the 3rd team only won two games throughout the season, their enthusiasm, good humour and their banter on the field were great to see. Tahir Budhai ably captained the 3rd XI and enjoyed the support of his Matric teammates who demonstrated positive leadership skills. A group of Grade 10 boys stepped up to the challenge and built the midfield admirably. While the players endured some problems, they were able to bounce back, demonstrating an improvement throughout the season. Memorable moments include two victories, against Durban High School and Glenwood High School. Both games saw the combinations and finishing work well, and both games ended with a 3-0 win. Another highlight was a hard-fought draw which came against a skilful Northwood School team. Goalkeeper Chris Howard-Browne put in a Man of the Match performance to keep a clean sheet. The season culminated in a draw against St Stithians College after a long bus trip to Gauteng and an early Saturday fixture in the cold. I want to thank the various young men who were part of the team for an enjoyable season. I hope the team enjoyed my stream of commentary from the side of the field. The team encouraged each other continually and enthusiastically offered support throughout the season. They started their season on a high, winning their first two matches and cementing their belief in their abilities and capabilities. The wins, however, were short-lived, interrupted mostly by the promotion of some players to the 3rd side. Thank you to Regan Shen, our team captain, for his leadership, dedication and courage. He led by example and in defence contributed to the team’s longevity at matches. He also assisted our attack by feeding the strikers with long through balls. One of the major highlights was when we beat St Stithians College 2-1 in our final match. I feel privileged to have worked with these boys. Their manners, attitude, the spirit of ubuntu in which they approached each match, coupled with having fun, was a pleasure to witness. Win or lose, the team was always positive and together.
