Chronicle-2019

129 practice and match in which they participated. They gave 100% at every match, but in a year where U16 hockey depth in all schools was strong, they tended to struggle. Our best performances came against the Durban High School U16C side where the team drew 2-2 and against Westville Boys High School, where, despite going down 0-3, the team displayed guts, determination and a never-say-die attitude. Thanks to all the parents for their support, and to the boys themselves for always looking “on the bright side of life”. Possibly the most excellent highlight of the season was watching this team develop, and watching these boys grow in confidence and ability. As a team, they improved their attacking formations and developed their defending skills. By the end of the season, the team made an incredible comeback, resulting in a 3-3 draw against Michaelhouse and a 1-0 win against St Stithians College. Their willingness to learn transformed them into a stronger side and they will be a team to watch in the future. Special mention goes to our captain Ongama Duze for his organisational skills and for the careful way he had the team warming up before every game. There was a noticeable improvement from Bandile Makhaya who started as backline player, transformed into a striker and scored crucial goals. Finally, special mention needs to go to our goalie, Ethan Sumner, who has always been a reliable player and who made some incredible saves throughout the season. This team was humble and hungry for knowledge. They understood they had lots to learn, and their strong work ethic and determination to get things done were their greatest assets. Results: Played 5, Won 1, Lost 3, Drew 2 Mr Manzin i Zungu Coach Under 14A Hockey The boys played a variety of positions, the norm with any hockey player, as this allows for proficiency in various positions. Goalkeeper, Hayden Davel improved consistently during the season pulling, off some match-defining saves, while Anesu Chimusoro led the defensive unit. Cade van der Merwe remained focused in pressurised defensive challenges. The performance in the midfield wasn’t always cohesive, however, the boys playing here worked hard. Special mention must be made of Jarred Christie, Zipho Cele, Tristan Gowdy and Dylan Wiggett who played well. The forwards worked hard on setting up the defensive press, however, their intense desire to score goals created nervous tension in their performance, proving counterproductive at times. Well done to Asande Nyawose, Ross Phillips, Kyle Pottinger and Michael de Beer for their penetrating runs and skilful passing. Fritz Rheeder consistently put in strong performances. The substitutes were selfless in their efforts, and I thank them for their patience and energy when on the turf. Hockey Calvin Davis
