131 Under 14C Hockey Regular players: Seth Abraham, James Engelbrecht, Thomas Godwin, Alexander Gordon, Kwanele Gumbi, Thomas Larson, Nala Madlala, Jadon Moodley, Brett Parkinson, James Radford, Matthew Rix (Captain), Dylan van Schoor A lack of depth in the U14C hockey group saw the team struggle against much stronger sides. However, the team was motivated and always keen to play the ball quickly and effectively, with the proper linkage between the defenders and attackers. Perhaps if we had converted more of our opportunities in the circle, our results would have reflected more convincing wins. One of the lessons learned this season is that our links, however, must work much harder in the years ahead. I want to thank the supporters of the U14C side for standing by us through the season. Thank you to our captain, Matthew Rix, for fulfilling this role admirably throughout the season. Finally, thank you to all the boys who participated in this year’s team. Your efforts did not go unnoticed. Once kitted out, and after convincing Alexander Gordon to try out in goals, the season began. It took some sorting to allocate the players to their prospective positions and to create a solid defence, but once we had achieved this, we saw decent results. One of the main challenges faced by the team this season was their transition from grass to the Astro during practices. The change resulted in players struggling to grasp any one style of hockey. Despite this, they gave their best and achieved favourable results. Due to the size of the team, there was a need for rolling substitutions, which meant it was difficult to keep track of everyone’s game time. The boys had a good season though, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was a positive season, and I trust that most of the players will continue with the sport well into their senior years at Kearsney.
