Chronicle-2019

141 The 3rd rugby team demonstrated maturity and character through a challenging season. As a group they displayed an understanding the balance between having fun and working hard at the sport. One of the memorable highlights of the season was the team’s win over Maritzburg College on the Stott. From the warm-up it was clear that the boys were focused and communicating well. Though standing their ground against a bigger pack, the scoreboard lead kept changing and with just a few minutes left, Cameron van Eck broke through the ruck with pure power, forcing his way over the try line to score. Greg Whitehouse stepped up and converted the try to steal the win, 27 – 26, in the dying seconds of the game. The 3rd XV was ably captained by Sizwe Sigasa and Andrew Watt, who together with the senior boys in the team, led with purpose and dedication. Thanks to Mr Senzo Mtshali for a job well done with the forward pack and for keeping the boys fit during the season. It has been a privilege to work with this group of young men. Due to seasonal injuries, players moved up to higher teams, leaving our squad depleted against Michaelhouse, Martizburg College and Westville Boys’ High School. Furthermore, they narrowly lost the game against Glenwood High School but finished the season with strong wins against Northwood School and St Stithians College in Johannesburg. The highlights were beating Hilton in our season opening game and the impressive comeback against St Stithians, where they held us until the last quarter of the game. The boys patience and determination paid off to clinch the win.
