Chronicle-2019

148 Under 14A Rugby The season was successful with the team winning seven of the thirteen games thus amassing a point’s difference of 149. They focused on improving skills this year and on enjoying the game of rugby. One of the highlights for the season was the tour to White River, where the boys had an opportunity to bond and make lifetime memories. Another was the resounding win at Michaelhouse. A low point followed this win where, after a positive start, the boys suffered stage fright in their match against Glenwood. They were bitterly disappointed by a loss. The most excellent highlight of the season was their performance versus Westville Boys’ High School where all 15 players gave of their best, taking the team to a victorious win. Thank you to Devahn van der Walt, who led the team well throughout the season and whose courage, mannerisms and work rate on the field inspired his teammates. He was well supported by star back, Likhona Nunwana whose natural attacking flair and defensive prowess proved menacing for many teams. Well done and congratulations to coaches, Mr Keagan Deponselle, Mr Ryan Horne and Mr Khaya Nzama for their efforts in developing the players. Furthermore, thank you to Mr Thinus Els for his positive attitude and the knowledge he brings to the team. Although losing to Hilton in their first match, the team showed tremendous character, playing with passion and pride that they carried throughout the season. Despite the loss, their positive approach culminated in memorable victories against Michaelhouse 33 – 12 and Westville 14 – 10 on their respective Old Boy Days. The season ended with the annual fixture against St Stithians on Rugby their home ground where the Kearsney side came home with a convincing win. Sim Mkhize led the team, displaying strength of character where the boys frequently relied on his leadership to rally them during tough situations. Thank you, boys, for your positive attitudes and camaraderie throughout the season. You can be proud of your progress. I have no doubt that several boys from this team will one day be chosen as 1st team players. It has been a privilege to have coached this group of boys and I wish them the best as they move into the older age groups.
