Chronicle-2019

164 The results were mixed, and the first half of the season saw the team take some heavy defeats losing 2 – 5 to Hilton College and 0 – 5 to Northwood School. The team however rallied, and the boys showed good progression and development as individual players and a team. The results were evident in a 1 – 1 draw to Westville Boys’ High School and a much improved 1 – 4 loss to Northwood School, where the half-time score was 1 – 1. Esihle Mfeka took charge of the team and led by example. He formed an essential part of our defensive structure and kept the boys motivated through some difficult situations. Mention goes to Asavela Mfazwe who joined the team halfway through the season, and who formed an integral part of our midfield attack. Although our results were not outstanding, the boys should be proud of the season, of their personal development but more importantly of how they grew as a team. They showcased an exciting brand of soccer, and I look forward to seeing their growth in the years to come. Playing some attractive soccer at times, defensive lapses at crucial times often negated the hard work created upfront. An example of this was the return match against a strong Westville Boys’ High School side. The team played sublime soccer in the first half to lead 4-1 at the break, only to see that lead evaporate through poor defensive marking in the second half. The highlight of the season was the morale-boosting victory over Kloof High School. The team was well-led by Sim Mkhize and then, in his absence, by Ross Phillips, who along with Seth Scorer, scored the bulk of the goals. Kyle Pottinger and Caleb Fyvie were immense in the midfield, putting in much work. Unfortunately losing Sim and Kyle to the U14B side had an impact on the attacking abilities of the team. Ross Phillips took over as captain halfway through the season and did a sterling job. My thanks go to all the players as well as to David Willington, who assisted at practices. A big thank you to Mr Thinus Els, who helped when we practised. The boys met their goal of enjoying every minute and expressing themselves on the soccer field. They played every match to the final whistle and didn’t let physical dominance get the better of them when encountering more prominent players from other schools. The first match of the season went to a strong Hilton College side who won 3-1, despite valiant play from our boys. They didn’t allow this defeat to get them down, but rather prepared strategically for their next match against Northwood High School. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and the team’s renewed confidence saw them claw back from a one-goal deficit to draw 1-1 against Westville Boys’ High School at their next match. The next fixture was again versus Westville Boys’ High School, but this time the boys faced a stronger and more clinical Westville team and lost 1-5. The players mustered all their courage when facing Michaelhouse. Their efforts paid off with a 1-0 win–the team’s first victory of a short season. In the final match of the season, the Northwood School players went on the attack, quickly scoring two goals in the first half. Though defending well, the team was outwitted by fancy footwork and individual skills and lost 1-3. Thank you to David Willington and Seth Vallance, who helped to coach the team and to the parents who were our most loyal supporters.
