Chronicle-2019

174 had been beaten in every department, they produced a bit of special play when their goalie swam up the pool to score an extremely well taken goal to even the scores at 6-6; literally on the final buzzer. Sadly, for such an exciting game, it was decided on penalties. We matched the opposition in the 1st round but lost in the sudden death to go down 10-11. The team showed phenomenal passion and resoluteness and the way they conducted themselves in and out the water should be a source of great pride for these lads as well as the College. After the high of the Top 10 tournament we played our stayers in the inaugural Northwood Stayers’ tournament where we were keen to test our new combinations for next year. It appeared the recent successes were infectious as we were unbeaten en route to our 2nd semi-final in a month where we comfortably beat Clifton College’s U16s. Water Polo The final against Reddam Helderkruin was a tense affair with both teams playing well. We led at half time but, despite our best efforts, we ran out of steam and lost 6-7. The team played with heart and self-belief and gave an excellent account of themselves. The final game of the season was against Clifton. Although it was expected to be a stayers’ contest, Clifton chose to field their full team, including five KZN U19A players. With our five Grade 12s out we were forced to use five of our U15s in their 2nd game of the day. The Kearsney passion was once again on full display. We pushed them all the way - drawing 3 of the 4 chukkas. With just a touch more luck the game was there for us to win. While it was a loss (11-12), taken in context is was another incredible achievement for this team. We knew the team this year had much potential but with untimely injuries we tempered our expectations. The season’s achievements were amazing, and we should salute the team of 2019, who not only gave us great pride, but also great hope for the future. My thanks go to our captain, Josh Muller, who always led from the front. Congratulations also go to Oliver Carmody, who was a great motivator, Oliver Kenny and Luc Le Clézio, who all earned over 100 caps for Kearsney and were, without doubt, an enormous part of this year’s success.
