Chronicle-2019

27 Abraham Maslow once said: “In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” It has been a privilege to see more than 140 Grade 8 boys step forward in 2019. No matter how big or small these steps were, the process of growth has begun. This Grade 8 group is the largest group in the history of the College and held an average of 100 boarders at any given time. Having this many bodies, and personalities, under one roof makes life interesting, especially at the end of a long and demanding term. Being considerate and exercising tolerance has often been the topic of House meetings, and I would like to believe that this year’s group have grown in understanding over the year to be more accepting of different people. I must thank the parents of the 2019 group for their support, patience and understanding. I want to compliment you for allowing your boys to develop, grow and experience this new chapter in their lives. Thank you for trusting that there was someone to give advice and guidance when needed. A big thank you must go to Siswe Sigasa and the rest of the Haley House prefects. Siswe’s passion for the College is contagious, and he has always set the most beautiful example for those around him. The rest of the prefects supported him well and it is evident that these boys formed strong friendships and enjoyed each other’s company. Thank you to the prefects for all your efforts and congratulations for doing a tremendous job. I know you will make the most of your opportunities and I wish you well in your future endeavours. Many staff members play a role in ensuring a successful year in the House. I want to extend a big thank you to Mrs Roxanne du Plessis, Mrs Kerry Coleman, and to the San Sisters for their dedication and for always catering for the boys’ academic, emotional and medical needs. To the estates’ department, laundry staff and cleaning staff, thank you for making life so much easier for everyone in your care, and for always doing this with a smile. I thank the Haley duty staff for their positive and professional approach in their dealings with the boys, parents and visitors alike. It is a privilege to have colleagues who are trustworthy and dependable. Memories and friendships formed, we learnt lessons about ourselves and others, and as a result, we grew as individuals. I want to congratulate the boys for completing a year full of new experiences and encourage them to keep stepping out of their comfort zones to grow on this journey to adulthood. Mr Mouton Badenhorst In my time at Kearsney, I spent a great deal of time in Haley House, with three of my five years taking place in the House. In this way, I gained such experience for the role of Head of House. I am truly grateful to be completing my Matric year as a member of the Kearsney family. Furthermore, to be part of a community where I could share my wisdom, as well as what I have learnt in my time here, is incredible. Not everyone gets such a fantastic opportunity. In doing all these duties, I was able to grow, not only as a leader, but also as a person. I am blessed with memories I will never forget and which I will forever cherish. It was a year of new beginnings for the Grade 8s who were introduced to not just any high school environment, but to a Kearsney environment. A situation which requires boys to push their boundaries and discover new talents, as well as being further moulded into well-rounded citizens of the world. On behalf of the boys in the House, and my deputies, I would like to thank Mr Badenhorst, Mr Zungu, Mr Eysele and Mr Deponselle for being catalysts in helping us achieve these goals. Thank you for trying to mould the Grade 8s into the beams of light that this world needs. I am aware of just how much you sacrifice for the well-being of the House and thank you. Thank you to Zukile Habile, Andrew Watt, Oliver Kenny, Michael Smith, Jordan Baker and Chase Kelly for having such a positive influence on the boys in your unique ways. You were excellent role models for the boys this year and were superb ambassadors for the College. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve with you, and I thank you for the memories made and friendships formed. Lastly, I thank the Haley House boys of 2019 for making our jobs easier by striving to prove you have what it takes to be a Kearsney boy. Now, take the time to build on the foundation which you have received throughout the year. My advice to you is to take advantage of every opportunity the College offers you and to continue to contribute towards the school positively. The bar is set–now it is up to you to keep raising it so you can be men of honour and integrity. Always remember that respect is not given; it is earned. Carpe Diem.
