36 INTERNATIONAL TOUR EGD, Drama, History and Mathematics USA Tour Academic International Tour On Tuesday 2 April 2019, 36 excited Engineering Graphics & Design, Dramatic Arts, History and Mathematics boys and four enthusiastic staff members set off on a 2-week educational tour of the USA, visiting Boston, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington DC. Our journey started in Boston with a guided tour of the Engineering faculty at Harvard University. The EGD and Mathematics boys then visited the Boston Museum of Science & Technology, where they participated in an Echo Based Bobsled Design Workshop and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where they participated in a Robotics Workshop. The Historians in the group visited the JFK Presidential Museum and Library, where they viewed exhibits chronicling the life of the former US President John F Kennedy. They watched a fascinating documentary about the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. They did a tour of a recreated Oval Office as it would have been in the White House during Kennedy’s term as president. The History group then joined EGD and Maths groups at the Sheer Madness comedy production at the Charles Playhouse. Facilitated by professional actors, directors and stage choreographers, the Dramatic Arts boys took part in workshops designed for professional artists in this field. The Drama boys also attended an exciting day-long workshop on acting for film at the Boston Acting Classes Studio. Much laughter and entertainment followed at the production of Spamilton - a parody of the hit musical Hamilton. The backstage tour of the Wang Theatre left the boys in awe of this theatrical landmark. Next, we travelled to New York, where we stayed at the Park Central Hotel, a short walk from Times Square. New York was a hit with the boys. They were in awe of this fantastic city and its labyrinth of subways. Visits to Harlem, Ground Zero/One World Trade Centre, Chinatown, Central Park, the Empire State Building, Wall Street, Central Park and the New York Highline gave the boys a feel for the American experience. The History boys visited the Museum of the City of New York where they viewed interactive exhibits and displays that presented the history of this vast and cosmopolitan city, beginning with its earliest settlement by the Dutch in the early 17th Century. After that, the boys visited the impressive Museum of Natural History. This is where the Night in the Museum movies were filmed. Our young actors were treated to To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Jeff Daniels (which had been nominated for several awards) and the classic Chicago were once in a lifetime treats for our young actors. The Drama boys were engaged in a day of workshops by the Shubert Theatre Organisation in New York. They were incredibly fortunate to have one of their workshops, a fight choreography workshop, facilitated by Christian Sordelet, son and partner of Rick Sordelet, a fight director of Broadway shows who also teaches at the Yale School of Drama. Following close on was an exciting tour of the Radio City Music Hall (posing with a real live Rockette) was inspiring and enlightening, giving the boys insight into what goes on behind the scenes and opening other career channels in the field of theatre. The highlight of our visit to NBC Studios was participating in recording a talk show. Boys were able to log in via a link to watch their performance. The New York University School of Engineering visit was significant for the EGD and Mathematics boys. They were treated to a tour of campus and of the new Maker Space Laboratory. Talks on Future Automated Motor Vehicles, 3D printing using concrete and lightweight concrete designing, added tremendous value to the visit. The group, together with the History boys, visited Madison Square Gardens to watch an NBA Basketball game in which the New York Knicks played the Washington Wizards. At the
