Chronicle-2019

39 AFRIKAANS 2019 was, again, a year where the boys excelled and worked consistently in a subject area that many find challenging. The year marked the introduction of a new film study for our Grade 12s as well as a change in our set book for next year. Both these changes were embraced with vision and excitement and I thank the teachers in our department for the smooth transition in these areas. Undoubtedly, from the boys’ perspective, the highlight of our year was the literature production in the second term performed by the students of Pitt-Productions. The evening proved to be a great success and the Grade 12s learnt a lot. From a staffing perspective, we would like to congratulate Mr Neil van Heerden, and his wife Rozane, on the birth of their son recently. Our teaching staff remains unchanged which provides stability to our department, for which I am grateful. I am looking forward to 2020 and hope to once again instil a love for the language among the boys as well as to cultivate a more positive approach towards Afrikaans by not only treating it as an academic subject, but also by incorporating fun in the classrooms. Finally, congratulations to our 2019 Grade 12s, Hayden de Kock and Neels Volschenk who shared the Afrikaans prize this year for being top of the grade. We are extremely proud of these boys and wish them well Mrs Sonia Cai rns HOD Afrikaans Academic Review BUSINESS STUDIES The year began with some wonderful news. Our 2018 Grade 12s achieved our best set of results with four boys achieving As, and our highest ever IEB average. This subject covers the trends in the business environment and our theme this year focused on service stations. This allowed us to focus on the fuel industry in South Africa and gave the boys an opportunity to learn about and understand the effects of the government regulating the petrol price as well as not having self-service stations in our country, which therefore assists with unemployment. This year also saw the largest intake into the subject at a Grade 10 level and 2020 sees the second largest group with an intake of 37 boys. This shows that more boys are considering careers in commerce and understand the value of Business Studies as a subject. We also introduced our own learner books and workbooks to the Grade 10s and 11s and will be rolling these out for the Grade 12s in 2020. We look forward to another pleasing set of Grade 12 results in their final examination. Mr Wayne Marsden HOD Business Studies
