40 CHINESE MANDARIN The study of Mandarin as a second additional language is now in its sixth year at the College. Ms Xu Dai has enthusiastically taught Mandarin for 3 years. She is a dynamic teacher who pushes the boys to achieve their best. Mrs Perrett joined our team this year as we had a bumper intake with 34 boys opting to take Mandarin in Grade 8. Mrs Perrett is a dedicated teacher who worked tirelessly with the boys, her passion and dedication will be missed. We wish Mr and Mrs Perrett everything of the best as they travel to China next year. At the end of 2018 our group of Grade 12 boys wrote the first IEB Second Additional Mandarin examination. The boys achieved an 81% average with Michael Lee and Jaryd Templar achieving 91% and 84% respectively. We are incredibly proud of the Mandarin class of 2018, their dedication and determination to do excel was fantastic to witness. Part of our programme in the Mandarin department is not only to teach the boys a new language but to immerse them in the Chinese culture as well. Our Mandarin boys made colourful lanterns for Chinese New Year and they created flowers using ink painting. They were shown videos and clips about Chinese food, festivals and culture. The Grade 12 boys were also taught how to cook Chinese fried noodles. On 11 June, we hosted our third Annual Cultural evening. The Grade 8 boys sang the Chinese version of the song “Baby Shark”, while the Grade 9 boys recited Chinese poetry and the Grade 12 boys did a voice over of a scene from “Zootopia”. The Grade 10 boys taught the parents and invited guests some Chinese phrases and taught them how to use chop sticks. In August, the senior boys sat the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (which means Chinese Proficiency Test). The HSK is an international standerised examination which evaluates the language ability of non-native Mandarin speakers. There are six HSK examination levels, the Grade 10s wrote the level 2 examination and the Grade 12s wrote the level 3 examination. The following boys wrote: HSK 2: Chris Henwood, Sethu Jackson, Luc Nazar and Alex Thorpe HSK 3: Ketan Gopichand and Alessandro Correia Mrs Rox-Anne du Plessis HOD Chinese Mandarin We are incredibly proud of the Mandarin class of 2018, their dedication and determination to do excel was fantastic to witness.
